Merry Christmas! Dec. 2014

One of our favorite things about this time of year is hearing from friends near and far, and reflecting on all of the good memories we’ve had over the years. Tyler and I celebrated 15 years of marriage last week, and can’t believe we aren’t that newly wed couple anymore. Time sure flies!

A lot of you already know how we ended up living in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, but for those of you who don’t, here is the story. When Tyler and I were newly married he did an internship at the U.S. Embassy in Chile. We loved our time there, and he got acquainted with many foreign service officers working for the Department of State and Commerce. We talked about what a great experience it would be to live abroad, and discussed it as a career option. But the application process took a few years and we were fresh out of college, so Tyler got a job and life led us in a different direction. We have talked about it on and off through the years, and 2 years ago we decided to apply and see what happened. Long story short, Tyler was given a job offer after a long process, and we felt good about accepting it. He is now a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, which means we will live abroad near different embassies around the world, and he will work with U.S. businesses looking to export their products and services. Our first assignment had to be state-side, so we will be living here in Ft. Lauderdale until summer 2016, and then will go abroad. Right now it looks like we will be in Lima, Peru or Mexico City for our first assignment, but we won’t find out for sure until Feb.

This is our first non-white Christmas, and it is a bit hard to get in the Christmas spirit when it is 80 degrees outside, but I love the warm weather and the palm trees. I took the kids swimming a few days ago and couldn’t believe we really live here.

We had a fun summer visiting family out in the D.C. area and exploring the many sites. We had many adventures, some good some bad, but were so glad we were able to spend the time out there, especially being able to spend time with family.

Ty is 13 and has adjusted well to life in Florida. He was having withdrawals from not playing sports for 6 months while we were in transition, but happily he is back playing lacrosse now and is thrilled about it. He is doing great at school and at church and sets a great example for the younger kids to follow. He is a Life scout and looking forward to earning his eagle before we leave Florida.

Shayla is almost 12 and counting down the days to her birthday. She is loving gymnastics and is very glad we were able to move our trampoline down with us. She has adjusted great to middle school and the move, and since she doesn’t have her own phone I let her use my phone to text. Bad idea, now she thinks my phone is hers, and I get texts with lots of emogies non-stop all day. She is so helpful with her younger siblings and is full of energy and laughs.

Garrett is 9 and a budding entrepreneur. His latest business is a foot-massage company, and he has targeted his dad as his prime customer. He loves to earn money and is very generous with what he has. He is doing great in school and loves to learn. We went to a book swap and he picked out an Algebra textbook just for fun and has been teaching himself Algebra in his spare time. Since we missed the soccer season he is looking forward to Lacrosse in January.

Grant is 7 and looking forward to getting baptized in August. He loves to learn and his favorite is math. He loves to memorize fact books and then quiz me to make me feel really smart when I can’t answer any of the questions :) He is also starting lacrosse in January and has been practicing with his brothers.

Miya just turned 5 and is our sunshine. She is always giggling and cheering everyone up, and saying funny things. She has become a great swimmer with all of the extra practice she has had here. She is in a co-op preschool and loves to learn. Her favorite words to write are “cat” and “pop” and I find scraps of paper all over the house with those words on them.

Kalia is 2 and is everyone’s favorite. She is Miya’s shadow, and copies every word that comes out of her mouth. She loved her birthday in September, and for weeks after she would say, “My birfday’s coming up!” dozens of times everyday. She loves playing with babies, and her stuffed animals, and sleeps with a dozen of her babies every night.

Some of my favorite memories of living here in Florida have been listening to the kids after we tuck them in bed at night. We hear the girls chattering and laughing, and we hear the boys wrestling and tackling each other and who knows what else. Since we are in a smaller home we have a boys room, and a girls room and they have really bonded with the extra time they spend together. I’m proud of how they have adjusted to all of the changes in our lives, as we have many more to come.

Life has been so good to us, and we are so grateful for all of the blessings the Lord has given us. We celebrate the birth and life and great gift of the atonement of our Savior at this time of year, and hope that we can remember Him always, and better follow in his footsteps. We are grateful for each one of you and feel blessed to have such wonderful family and friends.

Love,

Tyler, Lani, Ty, Shayla, Garrett, Grant, Miya and Kalia

Daily Bread

Life is so busy, I haven't had a moment to breathe, but right now the kids are napping, Ty's track meet just got cancelled for rain, and i have an unexpected bit of afternoon that opened up for me. What a gift!

So i've been working on preparing my lesson for the Beehives this Sunday, and I watched this wonderful video clip called, "Daily Bread." I wanted to share it. It echoes the feelings of my heart right now. Click below to view it:

So much catching up to do…Our house is finally on the market, and we had our first showing today, with an open house scheduled for Saturday. If you'd like to view the slideshow, here is a link: If you'd like to buy our house, please call us. I'm sure we can work out a mutually beneficial agreement :)

Tyler's last day at Ecolab is tomorrow, and he starts his new job as a Foreign Commercial Officer out in Washington D.C. on May 19th. He will be released as Bishop of the Hudson Ward this Sunday, on Mother's Day. Is that my Mother's Day gift? Maybe :) We have been so blessed by his service that I am truly sad that it is coming to an end.

We will receive our assignment where we will be moving to on June 10th, and then we are expected to be moved there by mid- to end-of-July. There are so many details that I want to know right now so I can plan and prepare, but I am instead learning to take one day at a time, and to ask for my daily bread each day.

So my daily bread today was to be able to clean the house and teach joy school and get out of the house by 12:15. Well, at 12:13 i had all of my laundry and kids loaded up in the car with me, pulling out of the driveway, with the house all spotless for our showing. Daily bread indeed.

And now, for the grandparents…photos!

 Kalia and Miya love play-doh
Ty is officially taller than me. Even in our profiles you can catch a glimpse of how each of us feel about that :) My kids are growing up way too fast!
Kalia loves reclining. She stayed in her baby carrier until she was 18 months. Not because she didn't weigh enough to move her up, but because my other carseat broke and I refused to buy yet another one. We just waited until we could bump Miya up to a booster, and now Kalia is riding in style again.
Kalia, Garrett and Miya washing windows as we prepped the house for the market. Not sure how effective that was because as soon as they washed one, Kalia came by and remarked them all. Oh well, I figure it wasn't a total loss because at least they are learning how to work, right?
Shayla for wacky hair day. She looked like she belonged in Jamaica. She probably wished she were there, too, with the cold spring we've had.
Garrett's pinewood derby car. It was nicknamed the money car, because since it wasn't heavy enough he glued a silver dollar and a few quarters and pennies to it. It was a beauty!
Grant cleaning out the crumbs between the leaves of the table, more prep for home selling.

Odds and Ends...

December was a busy month...Shayla had a dance recital and did wonderful. She is so graceful as she dances.
Garrett had a music concert--so fun to watch him sing with enthusiasm.
Miya's joy school group visited the nursing home and performed a nativity play.
So sweet!
Since we only have 4 preschoolers this year we enlisted the help of the older siblings and had a great group.
Grant was a cowboy for his music concert--cutest cowboy ever in my opinion.
Kalia still doesn't walk independently, but loves to cruise around if you hold her hands.
Tyler and I celebrated 14 years of marriage on Dec. 18, 2013. This is a potato I found that day that reminded me of us--2 potatoes that have grown together into one.
We went to Phantom of the Opera to celebrate and it was amazing. Such beautiful music.
Grant, Garrett and Ty are all playing basketball. I only had a picture of Grant though. He's got a sweet shot, that kid.
 Holiday baking and cookie delivering.
Ty was a shepherd in the nativity for our ward Christmas party.
And Miya playing in the Unimog--a giant tank-like army truck that our friends own.

Okay, now I'm finally ready to post Christmas pictures tomorrow!
Hooray for a New Year and catching up!

Moments

Today after lunch, Miya, Kalia and I had a dance party. We just danced our hearts out--a little Roar, some Riverdance tapping, and some boogie woogie. It was one of those perfect moments that I wanted to sear into my heart and memory forever. Kalia giggling, trying to catch the spinning room with her arms outstretched.  Miya playing dance instructor and making me mimic her ballet moves and spins. Joy, pure innocent, child-like joy. I love being a mom--best job in the world!

Miya's birthday!

Breakfast in bed for Miya, who turned 4 on November 30th, 2013. I asked her the next day how old she was, and she replied, "Mom, I know I had my birthday, but I still feel like I'm 3." That's exactly how I feel--still feel like I'm 20-something, yet, somehow I'm older...
Ty reading The Three Musketeers to Miya and Garrett
Miya requested an Oreo Mint Pie, just like one we had at Thanksgiving. She is my chocolate-loving girl!
This is Miya's first party with friends, and she loved the girly-princess time!

Miya is our little sunshine--she makes us laugh all day. We love you lots! Happy birthday, Miya!

Thanksgiving 2013

Playing catch up seems to be a theme in my life...
So, Happy Thanksgiving!
We had such a nice day, shared with family, friends, football and lots of good food.
This was our gratitude tree everyone contributed to--thanks to Shayla for making it for us!
All of the kids pitched in and were in charge of a project each--Ty made the creamed corn, Garret and Grant the cranberry sauce, Shayla the favors and tree, Miya helped with pies and Tyler made the stuffing and gravy. I made the ham and turkey and rolls and friends brought the rest of the feast.
I gave my camera to Garrett and Shayla and this is the best we got from the day...
 Grant and Spencer
Eli, with his parents Natalie and Tyler in the background
 Carving the ham

Relaxing and waiting for the food...
I wish I would have gotten a picture of our feast, oh well, next year.
Some of my favorites from the grateful tree are "funnynis, hot showers and a prophet."
We are grateful.

Merry Christmas!

We are freezing up here in Wisconsin, but wanted to wish you all a very belated Merry Christmas!!!

It has been so fun spending time with family and friends and we are so grateful for this season to turn our hearts to our Savior. We are so grateful for His birth, life and atonement for us. His perfect love makes it all possible, so we can someday live forever with him and our families.
As our family grows, we find it harder and harder to get a family picture with everyone smiling :)
At least Garrett's hair is short enough that Kalia couldn't pull it.
